Meet the team

The Siberians were bred by the Chukchi Eskimos in Siberia with the following traits: a medium size dog 35 to 60 pounds, can pull a moderate weight 400 to 500 pounds a long distance (500 miles) on a low calorie consumption, work well together (no fighting) and is good with children – the dogs would sleep with the kids. About 90 dogs made it over to Alaska around 1910, which were the foundation of the registered American Kennel Club (AKC) Siberian Husky.

October Siberians – our kennel name – are pure bred (AKC registered) Siberian Huskies. Our dogs come from reputable sled dog kennels and breeding of our best dogs. A good personality is a must when breeding and plenty of socialization of our puppies leads to dogs that are well balance and good around strangers and children. Most of the dogs on our team are a result of our upbringing and training. We take great pride in the performance of our team, knowing that it is a result of our training. Most of our dogs have been leaders on our team, and to see the performance of our best leader in Little River State Park is always an amazing sight. We are committed to the dogs we bring into our kennel (and the world), by providing them a lifetime here or placing in a good home – most of our puppies are in working dog kennels. We take great pride in naming our puppies and in most cases have a musical theme – you maybe tested on how the names were chosen. The dogs below go from youngest to oldest

Sonny born Spring of 2006. Sonny and the next three dogs are out of one of our best leader Hiatt and Dini a dog that came to us from the Yukon territory . When Dini gave birth we thought she was finish at five puppies, and then our daughter came home and pointed out number six – Sonny.

Zappa litter mate to Sonny. Zappa eyes are one of his best features. Beside the stunning blue, he has a dark pigment around one eye and a flesh color pigment around the other. If you are interested in the lineage of these dogs click on the pedigree 0.

Zevon also litter mate to the two above. Occasionally you get that dog that has that look which says I'm smart. Zevon is one of them. She is very busy trying to keep everyone in check.

Emmylou is the forth from this litter. She is a very sweet dog and reminds me of her grandmother Sonia .

JJ born the Spring of 2005. We have always been partial to black and white huskies, so it is hard not to keep him. JJ is out of one of our first dogs – Arlo, and a female from Alaska , Ashes, who we co-own. JJ is full of energy and makes his presents know. If you are interested in the lineage of JJ click on the pedigree 0.

Georgia was born summer of 2004. She is out of another superb leader, Sonia and has taken to leading as well. If you are interested in the lineage of Georgia click on the pedigree 0.

Rainy came to us from Alaska in the Summer of 2003. This kennel was where our first puppy, Kona, came from. After seeing his picture, a black and white bi-eyed like Kona, no further questions were asked. He is an outstanding leader for the team.

Dini came to us in the Spring of 2005 as a three year old. Beside looking for another good dog, we want a breeding possibility for Hiatt. Dini (short for Houdini) is a very sweet, easy going, hardworking dog and has produced four great dogs for the team.

Hiatt was born here in the Fall of 2000 out of our leader Sonia and a dog in Massachusetts (Action Jackson). He is one of our outstanding leaders and alpha in the dog pack. If you are interested in the lineage of him and Ryland (below) click on the pedigree 0.

Ryland – brother to Hiatt – is one of those looking for a good time personalities. He is not the leader his brother is, but he enjoys himself out on the trail.

Maui was born summer of 1999 the only puppy out of our first puppy Kona. Maui is a special case dog, being a singleton puppy. Raising a single puppy litter we tried to find a balance of being her litter mate, her people and her trainer. I am not sure where she puts us in those categories. She is very excitable and exuberant, always glad to be with you, but interacts with us more as a litter mate.

Sonia and here brother Memphis (below) are from our first litter in June of 1996. Daughter of our first leader, Micro (below), was a shinning leader in our team for many years. She is the mother of three of the dogs above and grandmother to the four puppies from the Hiatt and Dini litter in 2006. Sonia is such a sweetheart and has been a pure joy to have in our kennel. If you are interested in the lineage of Sonia and Memphis click on the pedigree.

Memphis is Mr. Happy Go Lucky out to have a good time. He has not been an outstanding dog on the team – I have to take responsibility for not bringing out his full potential as a trainer – but he is a joy to have around. As I filled out my trail journal after the run, he would fling his head across my lap on the couch as to say “be sure to write about how beautiful I was out there” .

Arlo is our first male puppy and the forth dog we bought, he was born in the Spring of 1995. Arlo was a strong hardworking dog, a sometime leader and finally retired in the Spring of 2007 prior to his twelve birthday. Arlo is the son of a Hollywood star. His dad Boomer can be seen in the movie Iron Will. The dog that looks like Arlo on the main characters team is Boomer. Arlo's son JJ is caring on with his enthusiasm in the team these days. Arlos spirit left us in November 2007.

Kona is a one of a kind dog. That look I told you about with Zevon, well Kona showed us what that look is all about. She is our first puppy and second dog in our kennel arriving a month after moving into our home in 1994. When our kennel was small and we had the time to work with our dogs individually, Kona and I pursued obedience training. Kona is the only dog we have a Companion Dog Title for and we accomplished it in three show – the minimum required to get qualified scores and difficult for Siberian Huskies to achieve. Working with Kona has developed a musher and lead dog bond which will be hard to match again. When people asked if dogs have intelligence capability, Kona has provided the stories to answer them.

Micro : If you have made it this far then you have found our founding female. As we got started, it was suggested to find an older trained lead dog.

George and Ann Cook of Alkasiber's Kennel in NH provided that dog. As your leaders get older, you worry about who will take their place. We have always believed in breeding our lead dogs and their off springs keep superseding their parents. Micro is mother to our first litter producing Memphis and Sonia (outstanding leader); grandmother to Ryland, Hiatt (outstanding leader) and Georgia (up and coming leader); and great grandmother to Zappa, Zevon, Sonny and Emmylou – leadership ability to be determined. Our first lead dog has made contributions to 9 dogs of the 15 dogs in our kennel. I have never had a dog showed so much gratitude to a single event in her life as Micro did. After adjusting to house living, she then learned getting on the couch was ok as well. I was lying on a heating pad for a sore neck, when this discovery was made. Micro laid on my chest and licked my face for a good half hour before she was asked to get off. Micro came to us at age 5 in 1995 and left us just shy of her 15 th birthday. She of course lives on in the dogs that came from her.

Thyme: Our first dog and a beautiful introduction to the Siberian Husky. The best way for me to truly share my feeling for Thyme is through a poem I wrote after his passing. 0

Thank you for visiting with our dogs. I hope you get a chance to visit with us and meet these wonderful dogs of ours.
