Special events and other activities

Racing: Although this is not our primary reason for having the dogs, it is a nice way to get together with other mushers and explore new trails. We have completed races in the 10, 30 and 60 mile classes in Vermont and New Hampshire . Races are excellent spectator sport, walk through the dog lot prior to racing is an experience indescribable. Races I have participated in have been at Craftsbury Vermont , Eden Vermont , Sandwich New Hampshire and Stark New Hampshire. When people ask when I plan to do the Iditarod. I hold out my hand and say, we are looking for sponsors.

School Visit: Bring a sled dog team to your school. The Iditarod Sled Dog race in Alaska always generates great interest in schools, and is the event of the year that we follow closely. Do you know how this event fits into the history and make-up of the Mushing sport? Our power point program explores this history, the dogs and the equipment needed to participate in the dog power sport of Mushing. We bring the equipment we use, the dogs and the opportunity for your class to take a ride or just meet the dogs. Our Siberian Huskies soak up the attention they receive when they are around children. We require a minimum of two hours on site for a fee of $250.

Winter Carnivals: Since the establishment of the October Siberian Kennel we have participated in our town, Hinesburg, winter carnival. We have recently joined in the fun at the Shelburne Farms Winter Carnival. Rides are available at both events, when snow condition permits, and we do make an appearance to meet the team when rides are not available.

Mentoring Program: Every musher starts off by finding a sled dog kennel and begins to help out. We always appreciate having an extra hand around. The Vermont High School Graduate Challenge has brought several students through our kennel. With our mentoring program we look for a commitment in the fall to the end of the season – it truly takes a full season for someone to gain a full understanding of what it means to own a sled dog kennel. There are mostly chores to be done, handling the dog to get ready to run, a the chance to drive the team with us and driving your own team. Success is measured by the individuals desire to pursue the sport or thinking we are nuts to live this way.

Other Programs: We can cater special program for your Scout Troup, 4H Club and other interested groups. We have proudly worked with the Special Olympics', The National Education for Assistant Dogs (NEADS) and the Howard Center , where adult group homes residence have come to help with daily chores. These opportunities are tailored to the individual need, with much success gained by the simple interaction of the dogs with the people.
